Galleria Borghese · Villa Borghese / Pinciano
A major project with Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, built around Bernini's Apollo and Daphne and Pluto and Proserpina, tracing Ovid's myths through Titian, Rubens, Poussin, Rodin and Brancusi.
The villa was illustrating Ovid long before this show arrived: one reviewer notes that the frescoes on its walls and ceilings interpret Apollo's places in Book II. Now more than 80 loans, built with Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum and running from Correggio to Rodin and Brancusi, are hung among Bernini's own Apollo and Daphne and Pluto and Proserpina.
The rooms follow the poem: Chaos and Creation, the Poet and the Book, Proserpina, Arachne, Leda, Pygmalion, Perseus and Medusa, then Venus, Cupid and Narcissus. Reviewing the Amsterdam leg for Apollo, Michael Prodger called it "something of a cabinet of curiosities", with wondrous works beside mere oddities, and expected Bernini's sculptures to lift Rome's version into "something unforgettable". Pygmalion fell for a statue he carved himself, which is roughly your relationship with the lamp you haggled for at Porta Portese.
It closes on Sunday 11 October, after an extension from 20 September. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 19:00, in strict two-hour slots, and a reservation is mandatory.
Apollo i Dafne oraz Pluton i Prozerpina Berniniego pozostają na swoich odwiecznych miejscach, a wystawa skupia się wokół nich: Tycjan, Rubens, Poussin, Rodin i Brancusi na nowo opowiadają historie Owidiusza. Wystawę współorganizuje amsterdamskie Rijksmuseum. Wstęp w zarezerwowanym przedziale czasowym.
Michelangelo's lost Leda, in copy
The original is gone, so a 16th-century copy of Michelangelo's Leda and the Swan stands in for it in the Leda section.
Bernini's Pluto and Proserpina
The Borghese's own marble is the centre of the underworld section: Pluto's hand pressed into the goddess he is carrying off.
Gérôme's Pygmalion and Galatea
A painting of the sculptor at the moment his statue comes alive, shown in the Pygmalion section.
Correggio's Danaë
Gold pours into Danaë's lap in a painting made for the Duke of Mantua, in the section on Jupiter's loves.
The French Narcissus tapestry
A tapestry of around 1500 shows Narcissus, near the end of the route.
Około 120 min
It closes 11 October, so there's no slack left to plan around it.
