Zapowiedź: napisana przed otwarciem wystawy

In 1980 PS1 hung a show called Afro-American Abstraction, and Lorraine O'Grady answered it with a performance that demanded "BLACK ART MUST TAKE MORE RISKS!!!" Forty-six years later, in the same building, this show takes her demand as its starting point.

It gathers more than forty artists across three generations. Paintings by artists who came up in the 1970s, such as Frank Bowling, Ed Clark and Sam Gilliam, hang alongside recent sculpture, video and sound, and several works come straight from landmark shows: The DeLuxe Show (1971), whose curator Peter Bradley supplied the title, and PS1's own 1980 exhibition. You reach a double-height gallery filled end to end by a freestanding structure Torkwase Dyson built for it.

Entry is free, and tickets can be reserved online. PS1 is open Thursday to Monday, noon to 6pm, and from 10am on Saturdays. The Open House on 7 November includes a talk revisiting the 1980 show, and the Bloomberg Connects app carries the wall text and artists' audio.
