Fondato nel 1977 dalla curatrice Marcia Tucker, il New Museum è dedicato a "nuova arte e nuove idee", sostenendo artisti viventi ancora prima che raggiungano la notorietà. La sua sede iconica, un insieme di scatole bianche disassate progettato dallo studio giapponese SANAA, ha aperto sulla Bowery nel 2007 ed è stata celebrata come un punto di riferimento dell'architettura contemporanea. Nel marzo 2026 il museo ha riaperto con un ampliamento firmato OMA che ne ha raddoppiato gli spazi espositivi, aggiungendo una scala scultorea nell'atrio, una piazza pubblica e una Sky Room al settimo piano. Trattandosi di un'istituzione priva di collezione permanente, il museo organizza ambiziose mostre a rotazione e la ricorrente New Museum Triennial dedicata agli artisti emergenti.
