Fondato nel 1867 per decreto reale di Isabella II, il Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) ripercorre la storia della penisola iberica dalla preistoria alla prima età moderna. Condivide il grandioso edificio neoclassico ottocentesco, progettato da Francisco Jareño, con la National Library of Spain, nei pressi di Plaza de Colón. Le collezioni comprendono testimonianze della Spagna iberica, romana, visigota, islamica e cristiana, oltre ad antichità egizie, vicino-orientali e greche, con capolavori come la Dama di Elche e il Tesoro di Guarrazar. Un importante intervento di ristrutturazione, realizzato tra il 2008 e il 2014, ha modernizzato le sale e il loro allestimento cronologico.
