Fondato nel 1905 dalla regina Amélia, il Museu Nacional dos Coches custodisce quella che definisce la più importante collezione al mondo di carrozze di Stato: oltre 70 veicoli storici, distribuiti nell’arco di quattro secoli. Tra i pezzi di maggior rilievo figurano le carrozze trionfali del 1716, utilizzate dall’ambasciata portoghese presso papa Clemente XI, e il landau sul quale re Carlos I fu assassinato nel 1908. Dal 2015 la collezione è esposta in un nuovo edificio progettato da Paulo Mendes da Rocha, vincitore del Premio Pritzker, di fronte all’antica Scuola Reale di Equitazione di Belém.
