La Gemäldegalerie dei Staatliche Museen zu Berlin custodisce una delle collezioni di pittura europea dal XIII al XVIII secolo più prestigiose al mondo, con capolavori di van Eyck, Dürer, Holbein, Raffaello, Tiziano, Caravaggio, Rembrandt e Vermeer. Nelle 72 sale illuminate da luce naturale dell'edificio progettato nel 1998 da Hilmer & Sattler al Kulturforum sono esposte circa mille opere, ordinate per epoca e scuola pittorica attorno a una sala centrale. I suoi fondi dedicati all'arte tedesca e ai primitivi fiamminghi sono considerati tra i più straordinari a livello internazionale.
