Fundado en 2006 por Mitchell y Emily Wei Rales, Glenstone integra unas 1300 obras de arte contemporáneo y de posguerra en casi 100 hectáreas de prados, bosques y arroyos, a unos 25 km al noroeste del centro de Washington. Su pieza central es los Pavilions, un edificio de casi 19 000 metros cuadrados diseñado por Thomas Phifer y finalizado en 2018, donde once salas monográficas de bloques de hormigón armado rodean un Water Court de unos 1600 metros cuadrados abierto al cielo. Al aire libre, los senderos serpentean junto a obras monumentales de Jeff Koons, Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy y Felix Gonzalez-Torres, en un entorno paisajístico concebido por Peter Walker que cuenta con unos 8000 árboles recién plantados. La entrada y el aparcamiento son siempre gratuitos, pero es imprescindible reservar con antelación una entrada con franja horaria: el museo limita el aforo a unos 600 visitantes al día y no permite el acceso a menores de 12 años.
