Fundada por la joyería Cartier en 1984, es una de las instituciones privadas de arte contemporáneo más destacadas de Francia, con una colección de más de 1.500 obras de más de 350 artistas. En octubre de 2025 dejó el célebre pabellón de cristal de Jean Nouvel en el Boulevard Raspail para instalarse en una nueva y vasta sede frente al Louvre, de nuevo diseñada por Nouvel en el interior del histórico edificio de los antiguos Grands Magasins du Louvre. Su programación reúne a artistas consagrados y emergentes en los campos del arte, la arquitectura, la fotografía, el diseño y la ciencia, con tres claraboyas acristaladas y galerías móviles que iluminan unos 8.400 m2 de espacio.
