Ubicado en el antiguo Real Hospicio de San Fernando, un asilo del siglo XVIII diseñado por Pedro de Ribera, este museo municipal de acceso gratuito recorre la evolución de Madrid desde villa modesta hasta gran capital europea. Entre sus más de 60.000 piezas destacan la Alegoría de la Villa de Madrid de Goya y la célebre maqueta de la ciudad realizada en 1830 por León Gil de Palacio. La ornamentada portada de piedra del edificio, una de las obras cumbres del churrigueresco madrileño, se conserva intacta desde la fundación del hospicio en 1722.
