Fundado en 1881 y trasladado en 1903 a su actual edificio, construido especialmente en estilo neomameluco, el Museum of Islamic Art alberga una de las colecciones de arte islámico más extensas del mundo. Cerca de 4.500 piezas se exhiben en 25 salas repartidas en dos plantas, seleccionadas de un fondo total que supera las 100.000 obras. La colección abarca desde la dinastía omeya del siglo VII hasta el Imperio otomano del siglo XIX, e incluye finas tallas en madera, cerámica, orfebrería, vidrio, cristal, textiles y raros manuscritos coránicos con caligrafía en tinta de plata. Entre las piezas más destacadas se encuentran una llave de la Ka'ba de época mameluca y textiles con antiguas inscripciones cúficas. En enero de 2014, un coche bomba dirigido contra una comisaría de policía cercana dañó gravemente el museo; tras una amplia restauración, reabrió sus puertas en 2017.
