El Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts es el único edificio en Norteamérica proyectado por el arquitecto de origen suizo Le Corbusier, quien lo concibió en colaboración con el arquitecto chileno Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente; abrió sus puertas en 1963. Una rampa de hormigón en forma de «S» eleva al visitante desde Quincy Street y lo guía a través de la tercera planta, flanqueando los ventanales de los talleres: la tentativa de Le Corbusier de convertir la «síntesis de las artes» en un recorrido transitable. En la actualidad, el Carpenter Center programa arte contemporáneo en sus salas Level 1, Level 3 y Sert Gallery, con encargos artísticos, publicaciones, actos públicos y residencias, todo ello gratuito y de libre acceso. Comparte sede con el Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies de Harvard y con el Harvard Film Archive.
