El Stasi Museum ocupa la Casa 1 de la antigua sede central del Ministerio para la Seguridad del Estado de la RDA en Lichtenberg, construida entre 1960 y 1961 como despacho oficial del jefe de la Stasi, Erich Mielke. Inaugurado en 1990 por la asociación de derechos civiles ASTAK, el museo documenta cómo se forjó el «escudo y espada del partido», cómo funcionaba y quiénes integraban sus filas. La exposición permanente «La Seguridad del Estado en la dictadura del SED» (State Security in the SED Dictatorship) reúne expedientes, fotografías y dispositivos de vigilancia de la Stasi, y tiene como pieza central el conjunto de despachos del propio Mielke, conservados prácticamente intactos, tal como los dejó.
