Στεγασμένο στο επιβλητικό, από κόκκινο τούβλο Pension Building του 1887 –σχεδιασμένο από τον στρατηγό Montgomery C. Meigs σε ρυθμό αναγεννησιακής αναβίωσης (Renaissance Revival) εμπνευσμένο από τα ρωμαϊκά palazzi–, το National Building Museum είναι το αμερικανικό μουσείο αρχιτεκτονικής, ντιζάιν, μηχανικής, κατασκευών και πολεοδομίας. Το Great Hall του έχει διαστάσεις 316 επί 116 πόδια και χωρίζεται από οκτώ κολοσσιαίους κορινθιακούς κίονες, ύψους 75 ποδιών και διαμέτρου 8 ποδιών, καθένας από τους οποίους αποτελείται από περίπου 70.000 τούβλα και είναι ζωγραφισμένος έτσι ώστε να μιμείται το μάρμαρο της Σιένας. Το κτίριο ανακηρύχθηκε National Historic Landmark το 1985, ενώ το ίδιο το μουσείο ιδρύθηκε με πράξη του Κογκρέσου το 1980 ως ιδιωτικός μη κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός. Παράλληλα με μακροχρόνιες εκθέσεις για τη στέγαση, την αρχιτεκτονική με LEGO και τα παιδικά βιβλία, φιλοξενεί περιοδικές εκθέσεις καθώς και μια φημισμένη καλοκαιρινή εικαστική εγκατάσταση στο Great Hall.
