Ιδρυμένη το 1992 στην Karlsplatz, αρχικά σε ένα κίτρινο προσωρινό κοντέινερ σχεδιασμένο από τον Adolf Krischanitz, η Kunsthalle Wien αποτελεί τον εκθεσιακό χώρο του Δήμου της Βιέννης αφιερωμένο στη σύγχρονη τέχνη. Χωρίς δική της μόνιμη συλλογή, επικεντρώνεται σε περιοδικές εκθέσεις διεθνών και Βιεννέζων καλλιτεχνών. Από το 2001, η κεντρική της έδρα στεγάζεται στο MuseumsQuartier –στην πρώην αυτοκρατορική Χειμερινή Σχολή Ιππασίας, η οποία επεκτάθηκε από το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο Ortner & Ortner– ενώ διατηρεί και έναν δεύτερο χώρο σε ένα γυάλινο περίπτερο στην Karlsplatz.
