Family archives, pressed flowers and a lakeside video explore grief, mortality and the women who came before. Student Gallery.

Hidden among her great-aunt Sylvia's love letters and family photos, Molly Steels found a fortune teller's prediction for Sylvia's life. You meet excerpts from it in a short video, set against Gooderham Lake, where both women swam, decades apart.
The rest of the Student Gallery draws on a century of family archives, centred on the women who came before Steels, alongside her own conceptual photographs. Some prints are treated as objects: Pauline (2025) is an inkjet print with pressed flowers, shown with family pictures such as Patti and Susan, a chromogenic print from around 1980. The title comes from the philosopher Diana Prokofyeva, who saw a photograph as a way of saying "Here I am and was, and always shall have been."
This is a personal show about grief and mortality by a Toronto artist and TMU photography graduate, and no one has reviewed it yet. Admission is free, the opening reception is 28 October from 6 to 8pm, and Wednesdays run until 8pm.
