Το Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) ιδρύθηκε το 1936 από τον φιλόσοφο και κριτικό Yanagi Soetsu, ο οποίος επινόησε τον όρο «mingei» (λαϊκή χειροτεχνία) για να αναδείξει την ομορφιά των καθημερινών, ανώνυμα κατασκευασμένων αντικειμένων.
