Χτισμένη από την αυτοκρατορική Ιαπωνία το 1908 με την ονομασία Gyeongseong Gamok, αυτή η φυλακή από κόκκινο τούβλο κράτησε φυλακισμένους Κορεάτες ακτιβιστές υπέρ της ανεξαρτησίας – ανάμεσά τους και την έφηβη μάρτυρα Yu Gwan-sun – επί 80 χρόνια αποικιοκρατίας, διχασμού και δικτατορίας, προτού κλείσει το 1987. Σώζονται έντεκα αρχικά κτίρια, μεταξύ των οποίων πτέρυγες κελιών, υπόγειος θάλαμος βασανιστηρίων, παρατηρητήρια και το κτίριο των εκτελέσεων, με τη μυστική σήραγγα από την οποία απομακρύνονταν οι σοροί. Από το 1998, ο χώρος λειτουργεί ως ιστορικό μουσείο και μνημειακό πάρκο, αναδεικνύοντας τον αγώνα της Κορέας για ανεξαρτησία και τη σύγχρονη πολιτική ιστορία της.
