Ιδρύθηκε το 1938 με την ονομασία Bohwagak από τον συλλέκτη Jeon Hyeong-pil (καλλιτεχνικό ψευδώνυμο Kansong) και ήταν το πρώτο ιδιωτικό μουσείο τέχνης της Κορέας. Το κτίριο σχεδιάστηκε από τον πρωτοπόρο μοντέρνο αρχιτέκτονα Park Gil-ryong για να προστατεύσει εθνικά κειμήλια από τις λεηλασίες της περιόδου της ιαπωνικής αποικιοκρατίας – ανάμεσά τους ένα αγγείο από σελαντόν, αγορασμένο στην τιμή 20 σπιτιών με κεραμοσκεπή, και το χειρόγραφο Hunminjeongeum. Σήμερα, το μουσείο διοικείται από το Kansong Art and Culture Foundation και εξακολουθεί να δέχεται το κοινό μόνο για δύο εκθέσεις με εισιτήριο τον χρόνο. Κάθε έκθεση αντλεί υλικό από τη συλλογή του, η οποία περιλαμβάνει δώδεκα Εθνικούς Θησαυρούς και δεκάδες ακόμη θησαυρούς από την περίοδο Γκοργέο – αγγεία από σελαντόν, ζωγραφική και καλλιγραφία της εποχής Τζοσόν, καθώς και βουδιστική γλυπτική.

Open to the public only during two annual exhibition periods: a spring show (late April-early May) and an autumn show (late September-early October), each running roughly 6-8 weeks. During an exhibition the museum opens Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays, by advance online reservation only via kansong.org. Outside these exhibition windows the museum is closed to visitors. As of 24 September 2026 no autumn 2026 exhibition dates had been announced yet.
