Ιδρύθηκε το 1911, όταν η συλλογή του πρώην Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes χωρίστηκε στα δύο. Το Museu do Chiado στεγάζει την εθνική συλλογή έργων τέχνης της Πορτογαλίας από το 1850 έως σήμερα, η οποία περιλαμβάνει και αρκετούς εθνικούς θησαυρούς.
