On the morning of 15 October you can watch the show being made, as ten young ikebana artists set their arrangements into the garden Domoto Insho designed beside his museum. The site map even marks Insho's own chairs among the works.
Each artist comes from a different Kyoto school, from Ikenobo and Sogetsu to Saga Goryu and Enshu, and the theme is "My Impression and Each Muse". Impression in Japanese is inshō, so the title also reads "My Insho". You walk in past nine arrangements grouped around the entrance, then follow the garden path to ten more, one per artist.
It runs four days, 9:30 to 17:00, and it's free. Indoors, the ¥600 Muses show of Insho's paintings of women opens the same day. Don't touch the arrangements, and there's no eating or drinking in the garden. The artists' notes on their pieces are on Instagram at @kyoto.shinsedai.
