The Modern Breakthrough: Masterpieces from the Museum's Collection
A rehang of 116 Danish masterpieces of the Modern Breakthrough, pairing stored works with icons by Hammershøi, Krøyer, the Anchers, L.A. Ring and Bertha Wegmann.
A young woman stands at a bedroom window with her back to you, two beds behind her and a row of trees outside. Hammershøi painted it in 1890, and the Charlottenborg jury rejected it that year.
It hangs in Gallery 19, part of a rehang of 116 works from the museum's own collection, a number of them back from years in storage. Gallery 20 goes to the rebels against 19th-century ideas about gender and love, Bertha Wegmann among them. Gallery 21 is Skagen fishermen and family life by Krøyer and the Anchers. In Gallery 6 you get three paintings all called Spring, by Ring, Syberg and Slott-Møller. The show runs into January, when this one room holds more spring than the rest of Copenhagen.
Come for Hammershøi and Krøyer and you also get their less-shown neighbours. It's the museum's own collection, so the regular DKK 110 ticket covers it (DKK 75 under 29, free under 18), and it's open until 20:00 on the last Thursday of the month.

L.A. Ring's Spring (1895)
In Gallery 6, the sisters Sigrid and Ebba Kähler stand on a garden path in Næstved on a canvas nearly two metres tall; Ring and Sigrid married the summer after.
Harald Slott-Møller's Spring (1895)
A girl in a flower wreath sits dead centre like an icon, her feet close to dark water, with black birds and bare fields behind her.
Bertha Wegmann's Little Fukki, Deceased (1907)
Wegmann's old dog lies on his pillow; she wrote that he looked "almost as if he was sleeping, that I painted him."
