Ο γλύπτης Frederic Marès (1893–1991) δώρισε τις συλλογές του στη Βαρκελώνη το 1946 και, δύο χρόνια αργότερα, το μουσείο άνοιξε σε τμήμα του παλιού Βασιλικού Ανακτόρου των Κόμητων της Βαρκελώνης, δίπλα στον καθεδρικό ναό, του οποίου ο κήπος στην εσωτερική αυλή σώζεται έως σήμερα. Οι αίθουσες γλυπτικής παρακολουθούν την εξέλιξη της ισπανικής γλυπτικής από την αρχαιότητα έως τον 19ο αιώνα, με κυρίαρχες τις πολυχρωματισμένες ξύλινες μορφές και με ένα ρωμανικό ανάγλυφο που αποδίδεται στον Master of Cabestany. Το 17-αίθριο Collector's Cabinet, το οποίο ο Marès αποκαλούσε «Sentimental Museum», συγκεντρώνει βεντάλιες, πίπες, ρολόγια, παιχνίδια, κλειδιά και φωτογραφίες από την καθημερινή ζωή του 19ου αιώνα, ενώ το γραφείο-βιβλιοθήκη του παρουσιάζει έργα της δικής του γλυπτικής.
