Das 2004 eröffnete National Museum of the American Indian der Smithsonian Institution ist das erste Nationalmuseum, das ganz den indigenen Völkern gewidmet ist. Der fünfstöckige Bau aus Kasota-Kalkstein wurde von Douglas Cardinal (Blackfoot) entworfen und erinnert in seinen fließenden Formen an von Wind und Wasser geformte Felsen. Jede Ausstellung entsteht in enger Zusammenarbeit mit indigenen Gemeinschaften und wird aus deren Blickwinkel erzählt – gestützt auf eine Sammlung von rund 800.000 Objekten aus ganz Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika. Zu den Höhepunkten zählen die Ausstellung über historische Verträge, Nation to Nation, die popkulturelle Auseinandersetzung Americans sowie das im Außenbereich gelegene National Native American Veterans Memorial. Das Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe serviert traditionelle regionale Gerichte der Indigenen und ist auch kulinarisch eine eigene Reise wert.
