Das als MOMAT bekannte Museum war Japans erstes staatliches Kunstmuseum. Es wurde 1952 eröffnet und bezog 1969 das heutige, von Yoshiro Taniguchi entworfene Gebäude im Kitanomaru-Park. Die Sammlung umfasst mehr als 13.000 Werke japanischer und internationaler Malerei, Druckgrafik, Skulptur, Fotografie und Kalligrafie – von der Meiji-Zeit bis zur Gegenwart. Sie wird in wechselnden Präsentationen der „MOMAT Collection“ sowie in Sonderausstellungen gezeigt. Das Museum liegt am Wassergraben des Kaiserpalasts, nur wenige Gehminuten vom Bahnhof Takebashi entfernt.
