Das Musée Gustave Moreau befindet sich in dem Pariser Stadthaus, in dem der Symbolist Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) lebte und arbeitete und das er in seinen letzten Lebensjahren in ein seinem eigenen Werk gewidmetes Museum verwandelte. Im Erdgeschoss und im ersten Stock sind seine intimen Wohnräume erhalten, während zwei weitläufige Ateliers im obersten Stockwerk, verbunden durch eine eindrucksvolle schmiedeeiserne Wendeltreppe, im Stil eines Salons mit Hunderten von Gemälden, Aquarellen und Zeichnungen behängt sind. Die Sammlung umfasst rund 1.200 Gemälde und etwa 4.800 Zeichnungen, darunter viele Skizzen und unvollendete Arbeiten, die in eigens vom Künstler entworfenen Schränken aufbewahrt werden. Seit der Eröffnung für die Öffentlichkeit im Jahr 1903 hat sich an der Anordnung kaum etwas geändert.
