Untergebracht im Neorenaissance-Palais, das der Finanzier und Bibliophile José Lázaro Galdiano 1903 errichten ließ, wurde das Museum 1951 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Den Grundstock bilden die rund 12.000 Stücke, die er dem spanischen Staat vermachte. Das Spektrum reicht von Gemälden von Bosch, Goya, Velázquez und El Greco bis hin zu Schmuck, Waffen, Emailarbeiten, Elfenbeinschnitzereien und archäologischen Funden von der Vorgeschichte bis ins 19. Jahrhundert. Ein beschaulicher Skulpturengarten sowie ein Barrierefreiheitskonzept, das zu den vorbildlichsten Madrids zählt, runden den Besuch ab.
