Das 1867 durch ein königliches Dekret von Isabella II. gegründete Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) zeichnet die Geschichte der Iberischen Halbinsel von der Vorgeschichte bis in die frühe Neuzeit nach. Es teilt sich sein monumentales klassizistisches Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, entworfen von Francisco Jareño, mit der Biblioteca Nacional de España nahe der Plaza de Colón. Die Sammlungen umfassen iberische, römische, westgotische, islamische und christlich-spanische Epochen sowie ägyptische, vorderasiatische und griechische Antiken. Zu den Höhepunkten zählen Ikonen wie die Dama de Elche und der westgotische Schatz von Guarrazar. Eine umfassende Renovierung von 2008 bis 2014 modernisierte die Ausstellungsräume und deren chronologische Präsentation grundlegend.
