Das 1884 gegründete Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) befindet sich im Alvor-Pombal Palace aus dem 17. Jahrhundert an der Rua das Janelas Verdes mit Blick auf den Tejo. Seine rund 40.000 Werke umfassende Sammlung reicht von portugiesischer und europäischer Malerei über Skulptur, Gold- und Silberschmiedekunst, Möbel, Keramik und Textilien bis hin zu Kunst aus der Zeit der portugiesischen Entdeckungen. Das Museum ist seit dem 29. September 2025 wegen Renovierungsarbeiten im Rahmen des portugiesischen Aufbau- und Resilienzplans für die Öffentlichkeit geschlossen; ein Wiedereröffnungstermin wurde bislang nicht bekannt gegeben. Teile der Sammlung sind inzwischen in Partnermuseen im ganzen Land zu sehen.
