Das 1911 gegründete Museu do Chiado entstand, als die Sammlung des ehemaligen Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes in zwei Teile geteilt wurde. Es beherbergt Portugals nationale Kunstsammlung von 1850 bis zur Gegenwart, darunter mehrere Nationalschätze. Das Museum befindet sich in einem Teil des ehemaligen Convento de São Francisco im Chiado, der renoviert und 1994 wiedereröffnet wurde. Die Dauerausstellung „Impressões Digitais“ stellt Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie, Installation und Video einander gegenüber. Ergänzt wird sie durch ein wechselndes Programm temporärer Ausstellungen in den Galerieräumen an der Rua Serpa Pinto und der Rua Capelo.
