Das 1998 in einer ehemaligen Pumpstation der Lissaboner Wasserversorgung am Largo do Chafariz de Dentro eröffnete Museu do Fado erzählt die Geschichte des Fado – von seinen Ursprüngen im Lissabon des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart. Die interaktive Dauerausstellung beleuchtet den Fado auf der Bühne, im Radio, im Film und im Fernsehen, die Entwicklung der portugiesischen Gitarre, die Atmosphäre der Fado-Häuser und das Leben Hunderter Interpretinnen und Interpreten. Überall laden Hörstationen zum Zuhören ein. Gemälde wie José Malhoas O Fado hängen neben Instrumenten, Kostümen, Partituren und Trophäen. Außerdem betreibt das Museum ein Tonarchiv, ein Dokumentationszentrum und eine Schule für portugiesische Gitarre.
