Das 1983 eröffnete Modern Art Centre der Gulbenkian Foundation beherbergt eine der bedeutendsten Sammlungen portugiesischer moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst – von Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso und Almada Negreiros bis Paula Rego. Nach einer von Kengo Kuma and Associates geleiteten Renovierung wurde es im September 2024 wiedereröffnet. Ein langes, einem Engawa nachempfundenes Vordach verbindet die Galerien mit dem erweiterten Garten. Wechselnde Präsentationen aus der Sammlung teilen sich das Gebäude mit temporären Ausstellungen, einem Zeichensaal, einem Projektraum und einem zugänglichen offenen Depot.
