Das Museum präsentiert die Privatsammlung des Ölmagnaten Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian: rund 6.000 Werke, von denen etwa 1.000 ausgestellt sind. Die Sammlung reicht vom Alten Ägypten über die islamische Welt, China und Japan bis zur europäischen Malerei, französischen Möbeln und Schmuck von René Lalique. Das modernistische Gebäude von Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, Alberto Pessoa und Pedro Cid wurde 1969 eröffnet und blickt auf den Gulbenkian Garden. Am 18. Juli 2026 wurde es nach einer 18-monatigen Renovierung wiedereröffnet. Dabei wurden die Originalmaterialien restauriert und ein neuer Raum für Numismatik eingerichtet.
