In einem restaurierten Werftgebäude aus Granit am Fuße von Pier 2 im Charlestown Navy Yard erzählt das USS Constitution Museum die Geschichte der »Old Ironsides« und der Menschen, die sie entwarfen, bauten und segelten. Auf zwei Etagen verbinden die Ausstellungsräume seltene Originalexponate und persönliche Schicksale mit interaktiven Stationen – hier können Besucher in eine Hängematte klettern, Taue einholen oder sich selbst im Segelreffen versuchen. Das Museum ist eine gemeinnützige, private Institution und wird unabhängig vom Schiff geführt: Die USS Constitution selbst ist ein aktives Kriegsschiff der US Navy, liegt nur wenige Meter entfernt vor Anker und kann nach einer Sicherheitskontrolle kostenlos besichtigt werden. Ein Besuch lässt sich ideal kombinieren, allerdings gelten für Museum und Schiff unterschiedliche Öffnungszeiten und Zugangsregeln.

Accessibility

The museum's two floors of exhibits are accessible to wheelchairs, walkers, scooters and strollers, and service animals are welcome. The ship is a different matter: it is kept in its 1812-era configuration, so boarding requires walking aboard the spar deck unassisted and the below decks are reached by steep ladder-like steps. Wheelchairs, walkers, scooters and strollers must be left on the pier.
