Das 1870 gegründete MFA hat seinen Sitz seit 1909 in dem von Guy Lowell entworfenen Gebäude an der Huntington Avenue und beherbergt mehr als 450.000 Objekte von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Der 2010 eröffnete Art of the Americas Wing erstreckt sich über vier Etagen mit Malerei, Skulptur und Kunstgewerbe – von präkolumbischem Gold bis hin zu Werken von Copley, Sargent und O'Keeffe. Die asiatische Sammlung mit über 115.000 Werken gilt als feinste und umfangreichste Sammlung japanischer Kunst außerhalb Japans, während die ägyptischen und nubischen Säle aus museumseigenen Grabungen in Gizeh schöpfen. Donnerstags und freitags ist bis 22 Uhr geöffnet, und jeden dritten Donnerstag im Monat gilt ab 17 Uhr das Prinzip »Zahl, was du willst« (pay-what-you-wish).

The Huntington Avenue main entrance has ramps on either side of the stairs and power-assist doors; the Linde Family Wing entrance on Museum Road offers a level entrance for visitors who need one. Wheelchairs and gallery stools available to borrow free. Service dogs welcome. The State Street Corporation Fenway Entrance is currently closed.
