Das KW Institute for Contemporary Art wurde 1991 von Klaus Biesenbach in einer stillgelegten Margarinefabrik in der Auguststraße gegründet – einem denkmalgeschützten Gebäudekomplex mit Innenhöfen in Berlin-Mitte. Ohne eigene Sammlung präsentiert das Haus wechselnde Ausstellungen, Performances und Diskurse etablierter wie aufstrebender Kunstschaffender und richtet die Berlin Biennale aus. Zu den ortsspezifischen Auftragsarbeiten in den öffentlich zugänglichen Bereichen gehört Dan Grahams verspiegelter Glaspavillon im Innenhof, in dem sich das Café Bravo befindet.
