Der Sitz des Museu d'Història de Barcelona (MUHBA) an der Plaça del Rei bildet seit 1943 den Gründungskern des Museums und befindet sich in einem monumentalen mittelalterlichen Komplex im Barri Gòtic. Unter der Erde folgen Besucherinnen und Besucher den Straßen des römischen Barcino vorbei an der Stadtmauer, Werkstätten wie einer Wäscherei und Färberei aus dem 2. Jahrhundert, einer Fischsalzerei und einer Weinkellerei sowie den Überresten des frühchristlichen Bischofskomplexes. Oberirdisch befinden sich der Palau Reial Major, der Saló del Tinell aus dem 14. Jahrhundert und die Kapelle Santa Àgata mit Jaume Huguets Altarretabel. Im gotischen Casa Padellàs ist die Überblicksausstellung „Barcelona Flashback“ zu sehen. Darüber hinaus betreibt MUHBA ein Netzwerk weiterer Kulturstätten im gesamten Stadtgebiet, darunter der Temple of Augustus, El Call, der Luftschutzbunker Refugi 307, die Bunker am Turó de la Rovira und El Born.
