Der Bildhauer Frederic Marès (1893–1991) schenkte seine Sammlungen 1946 der Stadt Barcelona. Zwei Jahre später wurde das Museum in einem Teil des ehemaligen Königspalasts der Grafen von Barcelona eröffnet – neben der Kathedrale, deren Innenhofgarten erhalten geblieben ist. Die Skulpturengalerien zeichnen die Entwicklung der hispanischen Bildhauerkunst von der Antike bis ins 19. Jahrhundert nach. Im Mittelpunkt stehen polychrome Holzfiguren, darunter ein dem Meister von Cabestany zugeschriebenes romanisches Relief. Das aus 17 Räumen bestehende Sammlerkabinett, das Marès sein „Sentimental Museum“ nannte, versammelt Fächer, Pfeifen, Uhren, Spielzeug, Schlüssel und Fotografien aus dem Alltag des 19. Jahrhunderts. In seinem Studierzimmer mit Bibliothek ist außerdem seine eigene Bildhauerkunst zu sehen.
