Smithsonian 旗下的 National Museum of African American History and Culture 於 2016 年 9 月正式開幕,是全美唯一一間專門記錄非裔美國人生活、歷史與文化的全國性博物館。這座佔地 35 萬平方呎的建築由 David Adjaye 率領 Philip Freelon 及 Davis Brody Bond 團隊共同操刀設計,建築外牆以三層青銅色格柵環繞,其鏤空圖案更呼應了昔日美南地區黑奴鐵匠製作的裝飾鐵藝。全館樓高十層,其中五層深入地底;參觀動線引導訪客先步入底層,由跨大西洋黑奴貿易展開 History Galleries 的歷史脈絡,循著斜坡向上走過種族隔離時期直至當代,再銜接至上層的 Community and Culture 展廳。博物館擁有逾 40,000 件館藏,現場精選展出約 3,500 件珍品,當中包括可入內參觀的 Jim Crow 種族隔離時期鐵路客車,以及 Parliament-Funkadelic 標誌性的 Mothership 舞台太空船裝置。
