博物館設於 Hôtel Carnavalet 及相鄰的 Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau 內,自 1880 年起開放,為巴黎市歷史最悠久的市立博物館,歷經 2016 至 2021 年的大規模翻修後煥發新生。館藏逾 625,000 件文物,藏品涵蓋史前獨木舟、高盧硬幣、法國大革命珍貴遺物、新藝術風格店面,以至完整重現的 Marcel Proust 臥室。穿梭於 Marais 區典雅的 16 與 17 世紀宅邸中,40 間重現歷史風貌的展廳與長廊引領訪客細味巴黎的滄海桑田。常設展覽免費入場。
