Mavis Pusey: Mobile Images
A retrospective of over 60 works from the Jamaican-born artist's 50-year career in geometric abstraction, including her Broken Construction series.

Within Manhattan (1977) is 73 by 96 inches of scaffolding, ladders and skeletal buildings in red, white and blue, and it was the largest work when this show opened in Philadelphia last year. Pusey photographed trucks, storefronts and building materials on city walks, then rebuilt them as geometric paintings.
The Hammer presents more than 60 works from her 50-year career, in oil, ink, graphite, lithograph and screenprint. In Philadelphia the show ran in three sections, the body, construction and music, and included her fashion sketches for coats and tailored suits. It is the first major museum survey of her work.
Pusey made art from scaffolding; you have walked under the Wilshire Boulevard version without a second look. Entry is free, Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 6pm, with a curator walk-through at 1pm on 11 October.
