Santa Croce 是極少數在各層面都令人讚嘆的聖殿——無論從建築構造、藝術珍藏，抑或作為瞻仰西方文明巨擘的朝聖地而言，皆無與倫比。這座全球規模最大的方濟各會教堂始建於 1294 年（相傳由 Arnolfo di Cambio 設計），歷來是佛羅倫斯顯赫名士安息的首選之地。Michelangelo、Galileo、Machiavelli、Rossini 與 Ghiberti 均長眠於此處的紀念陵墓，殿內亦設有 Dante 的衣冠冢（詩人真身實葬於 Ravenna）。據說作家 Stendhal 曾因被這裡過度密集的偉大心靈所震撼而暈眩，因而誕生了著名的「司湯達症候群」（Stendhal syndrome）。 堂內的藝術珍藏同樣超凡絕倫。Giotto 繪於 Bardi Chapel 與 Peruzzi Chapel 的濕壁畫，堪稱西方繪畫史的奠基之作。此外，館藏還包括 Cimabue 創作的十字架苦像（雖在 1966 年水災中嚴重受損，卻依舊震撼人心）、Donatello 的《聖母領報》（Annunciation）浮雕，以及 Taddeo Gaddi 與 Agnolo Gaddi 筆下的濕壁畫。迴廊深處由 Brunelleschi 設計的 Pazzi Chapel，更是早期文藝復興建築中的一顆璀璨明珠。 教堂門外的廣場是佛羅倫斯最重要的公共空間之一，每年 6 月都會在此舉行傳統的古典足球賽（Calcio Storico）；遊客亦可由教堂建築群內部前往參觀著名的頂級皮革工藝學院（Scuola del Cuoio）。此區亦是 1966 年 Arno 大水災中受創最嚴重的區域，隨著 2026 年迎來水災 60 週年，當地預計將舉行一系列紀念活動。
