Otto Meets Albertina

An Ottifant pushes a lawnmower towards Dürer's Great Piece of Turf, the 1503 watercolour of a clump of meadow grass. Otto Waalkes calls his version Final Cut, and it hangs beside the original.

There are twelve pairings in the Habsburg State Rooms, made for the Albertina's 250th birthday: an Otto painting next to a drawing or watercolour from the print collection. You walk past silk walls and chandeliers to find an Ottifant on the lap of Schiele's sister-in-law, and a Klimt lady in a black hat with a trunk growing out of her face. Der Standard's critic admits to a moment of shock at that one before the laughing started. Otto says you have to know the original to parody it.

Director Ralph Gleis wants it to pull in people who skip art museums, and it suits anyone who grew up with Otto. Tours are in German only. It's included in the €20.90 ticket, under-19s are free, and the museum stays open until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays.
