Główny gmach Wien Museum przy Karlsplatz, zaprojektowany w latach 50. XX wieku przez Oswalda Haerdtla, został ponownie otwarty 6 grudnia 2023 roku po modernizacji i rozbudowie według projektu pracowni Certov, Winkler + Ruck, która wzbogaciła budynek o dwie kondygnacje i nowy pawilon wejściowy. Bezpłatna wystawa stała „Wien. Meine Geschichte” przedstawia dzieje Wiednia na trzech piętrach za pomocą 1700 eksponatów – od pierwszych osad po współczesność. Wśród najważniejszych punktów ekspozycji znajdują się portret Emilie Flöge pędzla Gustava Klimta z 1902 roku, pięciometrowy model katedry św. Szczepana oraz Poldi – dziesięciometrowy wieloryb z Prateru. Najwyższe piętro przeznaczono na wystawy czasowe; mieści się tam również kawiarnia z bezpłatnym tarasem widokowym na centrum miasta.
