Założone w 1867 roku na mocy dekretu królowej Izabeli II Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) ukazuje dzieje Półwyspu Iberyjskiego od prehistorii po wczesną epokę nowożytną. Zajmuje wraz z National Library of Spain monumentalny, XIX-wieczny neoklasycystyczny gmach zaprojektowany przez Francisco Jareño, położony w pobliżu Plaza de Colón. W zbiorach znajdują się zabytki z Hiszpanii iberyjskiej, rzymskiej, wizygockiej, islamskiej i chrześcijańskiej, a także starożytności egipskie, bliskowschodnie i greckie. Wśród najważniejszych obiektów są Dama z Elche oraz wizygocki Skarb z Guarrazar. Zakrojona na dużą skalę modernizacja przeprowadzona w latach 2008–2014 unowocześniła galerie i ich chronologiczną aranżację.
