Mera, Don e Jason Rubell collezionano arte contemporanea dal 1964; nel 2022 ne hanno portato una selezione a Washington, aprendo quasi 3.000 metri quadrati di spazi espositivi nel quartiere Southwest. L'edificio è quello della ex Randall Junior High School, una storica scuola pubblica afroamericana costruita nel 1906 e chiusa nel 1978. I Rubell l'hanno acquistata dalla Corcoran Gallery of Art nel 2010, affidando allo studio Beyer Blinder Belle il compito di riportare le aule all'essenzialità di mattoni a vista, acciaio e ampie finestre. Marvin Gaye fu uno dei suoi allievi, e proprio a lui rendeva omaggio il titolo della mostra inaugurale, What's Going On. Il museo rinnova l'allestimento quasi per intero ogni anno, offrendo a ogni visita una prospettiva diversa — con ingresso sempre gratuito per chi risiede a DC.
