La Renwick è la sede del Smithsonian American Art Museum dedicata all'artigianato contemporaneo e alle arti decorative, affacciata su Lafayette Square a un isolato dalla White House. Progettata nel 1859 da James Renwick Jr. per il banchiere William Wilson Corcoran nello stile Secondo Impero ammirato al Louvre, fu il primo edificio negli Stati Uniti costruito espressamente per ospitare un museo d'arte; la scritta «Dedicated to Art» è ancora scolpita sopra il portale e il senatore Charles Sumner la ribattezzò «the American Louvre». Salvata dalla demolizione nel 1962 grazie a una campagna guidata da Jacqueline Kennedy e riaperta nel 1972 come galleria di artigianato artistico dello Smithsonian, espone su due piani opere in fibre tessili, ceramica, vetro, metallo e legno realizzate da maestri artigiani americani, con il Grand Salon come cuore espositivo. L'ingresso è gratuito. Nota: l'edificio è temporaneamente chiuso al pubblico fino al 13 novembre 2026 per i lavori di riallestimento in vista della mostra Lavoro manuale: Artigianato contemporaneo alla Renwick Gallery (Handwork: Contemporary Craft at the Renwick Gallery).
