Inaugurato nel 1926 con il nome di Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum, fu il primo museo d’arte pubblico del Giappone, fondato grazie a una donazione del magnate del carbone Keitaro Sato. Ricostruito nel 1975 su progetto modernista dell’architetto Kunio Maekawa, che colloca gran parte dell’edificio al di sotto del livello del suolo per inserirlo con discrezione nel verde del parco di Ueno, oggi ospita importanti mostre internazionali con opere in prestito, accanto a un fitto calendario di esposizioni organizzate da associazioni e collettivi di artisti che affittano le sue gallerie. L’accesso all’edificio è gratuito; le mostre temporanee prevedono un biglietto separato.
