Ospitato nell'Hôtel Carnavalet e nell'adiacente Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau, è il più antico dei musei della Ville de Paris, aperto dal 1880 e rinato dopo i lavori di ristrutturazione condotti tra il 2016 e il 2021. La collezione, che conta circa 625.000 oggetti, abbraccia un arco temporale che va dalle piroghe preistoriche e le monete gallliche alle testimonianze della Rivoluzione francese, dalle vetrine Art Nouveau alla camera da letto ricostruita di Marcel Proust. Quaranta sale e gallerie d'epoca raccontano la storia di Parigi attraverso gli eleganti palazzi del Marais risalenti al XVI e XVII secolo. L'ingresso alla collezione permanente è gratuito.
