Fondata dal gioielliere Cartier nel 1984, è una delle più importanti istituzioni private francesi dedicate all'arte contemporanea, con una collezione di oltre 1.500 opere di più di 350 artisti. Nell'ottobre 2025 ha lasciato il celebre padiglione di vetro firmato da Jean Nouvel su Boulevard Raspail per una nuova, vasta sede di fronte al Louvre, anch'essa progettata da Nouvel all'interno dell'edificio vincolato che fu sede dei Grands Magasins du Louvre. Il suo programma valorizza artisti affermati ed emergenti tra arte, architettura, fotografia, design e scienza, con tre lucernari vetrati e gallerie mobili che illuminano circa 8.400 m2 di spazio.
