Ospitato in un padiglione in stile Secondo Impero all'angolo nord-ovest del Jardin des Tuileries, il Jeu de Paume fu costruito nel 1861 come campo per il gioco della pallacorda e trasformato nel corso dei decenni in una galleria d'arte. Dal 2004 è la principale istituzione francese dedicata alla fotografia e alle immagini in movimento, e organizza grandi retrospettive e commissioni contemporanee piuttosto che conservare una collezione permanente. Le mostre monografiche del passato hanno avuto come protagonisti Cindy Sherman, Martin Parr e William Kentridge, attirando ogni anno più di 300.000 visitatori.
